Quirinal Palace
Presidential palace.
It is the official residence of the President of the Republic. It has a long history. In the XVIth century Pope Gregory XIII began the construction of a summer residence on the Quirinal hill, considered healthy and in a good location compared to the centre of power (near the Capitoline hill). Many popes lived in this place, each one bringing his own changes until the end of the Pontifical State in 1870, when Rome was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy. The building then housed the royal family until the referendum in 1946 decided the birth of the Italian Republic.
