A true symbol of the city, the Flavian Amphitheatre, commonly known as the Colosseum (or Coliseum), is the largest amphitheatre in Rome and is considered to be one of the finest Roman buildings ever constructed. Its ingenious design has greatly influenced architecture throughout the ages, and it continues to influence modern day stadium design. The Colosseum is one of Rome's most popular tourist attractions: millions of visitors each year flock to see the famous arena.

Its construction began under Emperor Vespasian, and was completed under Emperor Titus. Having survived the ages largely intact, it remains a key venue in the Italian capital, even today.

The bleachers could accommodate 55,000 spectators: this arena was the scene of bloody gladiatorial contests and spectacular shows. On your visit, you can see the cells where lions were kept before fights, and will learn how the arena could be flooded in order to recreate great sea battles.
